I am inclined to believe tradition is, in and of itself, meaningless. Demonstrate to me utility, and I will believe your methods are good. But to defend a practice merely on the basis of precedent or its adherence to one, or (worse) to bless it for having come from a great person — I have seen too many intelligent people praise dangerous, draconian, and even violent systems on the basis of tradition to treat such arguments with anything but abject suspicion.
